But just hours after the exodus from their valley, the wiry people attacked again. One spear flew in and hit the leg of an elder.

Lor ran in fury towards them and picked up two of the scrawny men and threw them into three others, causing them to fall and drop their spears.

“Leave us alone!” Lor yelled and picked up two more of the skinny attackers, tossing them like twigs. “We mean you no harm.”

Seeing his courage, Lor’s people did the same, and lunged toward the hordes. But the invaders overwhelmed them. Although Lor’s thicker and stronger men fought with fierceness, they again fell due to those numbers. Lor and his people realized they couldn’t win and would die. All their history, legacy and presence would vanish.

However, just as several of Lor’s tribe fell, an eerie sound came from the sky like a screaming eagle. A great bird came down and hovered over them. Fire erupted from the bird’s mouth and hit the attacking people. The fire didn’t kill them, but it sent them running in pain away from Lor’s tribe. A few still fought and one tried to pull Beth away. But more fire shot out and caused the attacker to drop her and to flee screaming. The rest followed and ran to the east so fast, they couldn’t be seen.

Some of Lor’s tribe sat in shock, while others laughed and danced at the fleeing horde. A few of Lor’s people looked at the great bird and ran in fear toward the cold lands.

Lor felt the same fear. But seeing how it saved his tribe, he couldn’t just leave. He watched the creator’s eagle land in their midst. The shaman stood by his side, smiled and grabbed Lor’s shoulder.

“I told you,” the shaman said. “They came here to help us.” So Lor tried to stay calm.

They heard a hissing sound, the bird’s mouth opened and the creator’s creatures emerged. These people looked much different from them, and even more different than the tall people. Lor saw four fingers on each hand and oval shaped heads with warm glowing skin and eyes. Without doubt, they must be from a far away valley, definitely even beyond the cold lands.

But yet, Lor’s heart told him these strange creatures were like themselves in spirit.

“Let’s shake their hand.” The shaman walked to them and embraced each one. Lor did the same.

“Hello.” Lor said. “Why are you here?”

“Hello.” The alien said. “We came to help you.”

“They can speak our language.” Lor looked to the shaman. “Even the skinny ones can’t do that.”

Several of the creatures tried to heal the wounded, while others smiled and appeared at ease with themselves and Lor’s people.

“We can take your tribes to a new valley in our flying boats. A valley of peace and plenty.”

“Did you hear?” the shaman said. “No more suffering or hardship.”

The creatures opened their arms and tried to direct them to the ship.

“We can’t go in there.” Beth looked at the ship with trepidation. The dark interior looked scary, since they couldn’t see in.
